I can’t believe I’ve only just discovered how to make a pom pom.
And now, I’m obsessed. They are so fun, and easy to make and I can’t get enough of them.
I was telling my husband, I’m going to make pom pom everything! There’s going to be pom pom’s EVERYWHERE!
And then I remembered a pom pom necklace I wanted to buy Els when we were in K-town a while back. I also remember it feeling outrageously priced. Screw that. I’m gonna make my own, I said. And so I did. Pom Pom necklaces for everyone! (For Christmas, that is.)
Here’s what I did:
(For your convenience, affiliate link.)
I bought some yarn. Specifically, Lion brand BonBons Yarn in Party. It’s a metallic, in red, teal, sparkling taupe, gold, dark purple, magenta and copper.
It’s a very fine yarn. But the colors are so pretty, so fall/winter, and just enough sparkly.
Because it was so fine, I had to wrap it around each fork 100 times.
After wrapping the yarn around the fork, I took the same color yarn and cut a 20 cm piece to wrap around the yarn through the middle of the fork. I needed my husband’s help to tie the knot, because I found that it had to be really really really tight. I then slid the yarn off the fork. Took scissors and cut through each side. I then trimmed and trimmed until it looked just right.
I’m not gonna lie, it’s pretty time consuming. But it’s totally worth it. Once you have them in your hands, all pom pommy and soft… it’s like holding a little puppy. You’ll just want to sit and stare at them for a while.
I also bought some purple necklace string and a plastic sewing needle.
I threaded the needle with the string, tied a single knot, and strung through each pom pom to make a necklace. I used five per necklace in different color combinations.
I then tied two knots on each end, to make an adjustable string. Just take one end and tie it to the string, and vice versa.
Ta da! A handmade pom pom necklace.
I love the colors and the tiny specks of glitter.
The perfect handmade Christmas gift for kids, I think. I made one for all of Els’ little cousin’s and friends.
My new motto: You can’t go wrong with a pom pom.
All packaged and ready to go.
I found these little gift pouches at World Cost Plus. The necklaces fit in them perfectly.
