I love experimenting with muffins. Especially if I can add some veggies in them and have them be sweet without any added sugar. That way I can eat them for breakfast, and I know I can give them freely to my toddler. Don’t get me wrong, I do love a nice bakery muffin too. But these are great for everyday on-the- go snacks for both kids and adults!
These no sugar toddler muffins also have no butter. With two added veggies. And they’re shaped like hearts because everything tastes better shaped like a heart. What makes these babies sweet, is the bananas and unsweetened applesauce.
I have to say, these toddler muffins are DELICIOUS. Subtly sweet and very moist. And it feels good to know, that my toddler is eating something wholesome.
To healthy snacks. And healthy breakfasts.
Have a great Valentine’s Day!
No Sugar. No Butter. Healthy Muffins for Toddlers.
Healthy muffins without any refined sugar or butter for toddlers and kids.
Ingredients
- 1 cup of whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup of oat bran
- 1/3 cup of organic coconut or avocado oil
- 1/2 cup of organic unsweetened applesauce
- 2 ripe bananas
- 1 cup of shredded carrots
- 1 small zucchini
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp of baking soda
- 1 tsp of cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp of ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp of ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp of salt
Instructions
- Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Mix together oil, applesauce and eggs in a large mixing bowl.
- Put carrots, zucchini and bananas in a food processor and chop fine. (I did this, because if Els found a long shred of carrot in the muffin, that would have been the end of the muffin.)
- Once chopped, pour into mixing bowl with the applesauce, oil and eggs.
- Stir in dry ingredients: whole wheat flour, oat bran, baking soda, cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground ginger and salt.
- Spoon in muffin batter 2/3 full. And bake for 15 minutes.

Do you have nutrition content?
Hi, you can feel free to search online calorie counters online under your own discretion. I am personally not a professional nutritionist and am not comfortable giving that information. Thank you!
I made these yesterday and they were delicious!!!! Great taste and moist. Thank you for posting. I’d been saving various muffin recipes for a while, but when I went back to select one they all had 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup sugar, honey, maple, etc.
So glad you liked them!
Yummy! I used coconut oil and flax meal. because it is what I had on hand. I also don’t have a food processor so I hand grated the veggies and mashed the banana with a fork. The texture came out soft and they are perfectly moist. Delicious treat without being a sugar bomb–win!
These are simply the best muffins ever. I have been making them for my toddler since he was able to eat them. I add in/swap out various combinations of broccoli, pumpkin, twelve grain cereal, gluten free flour, always 1c oats/half c flour and they ALWAYS turn out well. LOVE them. Thanks!
I have a very picky toddler. We don’t ear sugar in our house, so I thought these would be great. He loves bananas and apples, but unfortunately he hated the muffins. My husband said they were pretty good, but a little bland. They smell wonderful, but unfortunately not a,hot.
sorry to hear that! hopefully one day your toddler may change his/her mind!
This is a superb recipe! Finally a one without sugar, that’s just sooo great! Thx for it!
These are great! My little guy loved them too. I cut the sugar in half (only 1/4 cup) and only used half a cup of flour and the rest was oatmeal. I added a bit of baking powder to make up for the lost flour (which I read about doing on another website). Delicious. Honestly, next time, I might cut out the sugar entirely and see how they are. The carrots, applesauce and banana should make them sweet enough.
I’m confused what sugar did you reduce?
I didn’t use any sugar. Used applesauce and bananas instead.

My 10 month old son absolutely loved these muffins! The only thing I did was instead of wheat flour I used wheat pastry flour, quick cooking oats and no egg. I personally felt they needed sugar but my taste don’t matter since I was looking for a muffin recipe for my son. Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! 🙂
These were amazing! I’m making them again today. No toddlers around here yet, but my husband and I love these for breakfast. So many nutrients packed in there, and just enough sweetness.
i would like to pin this but can’t; i don’t see the option nor does my web browser allow me to.
are you logged into your pinterest account? you should login first and see if that works..thanks!
Hi there, these took AGES to bake – like, 1.5hrs! Am I doing something wrong?
Yes, probably. It should not take that long at all. Double check all the ingredients, especially the wet ingredients. And try again. Good luck!
Thank you!
Do you have nutritional contents…calories, carbs, fat, fiber??
I was wondering how you store these. I made before and baby loved them, but was not sure if you store in fridge.
Thanks
We ate these so quick they never lasted more than a couple days! But we do not put in the fridge. We store in an air tight container. Hope that helps!
I freeze and pop in microwave for 30 sec and they’re great!! Top with some PB and been a go to for my picky toddler since she could eat- often its dinner.
Love that these muffins blend up the veggies, because I also have a picky toddler that wouldn’t eat “strings” of veggies! I made these muffins without alteration, although I possibly had more banana than two in this batch (I had pulled out some frozen banana). The muffins were really moist, which was great – but I think I’d like to adda bit more flour or perhaps some oats next time for a bit more structure. Thanks for the recipe!
For the Mom that was asking, the egg can easily be replaced with “flax eggs” (google it) or leave it out all together because the banana works acts as the binding agent. A little apple cider vinegar added/stirred in just before scooping will help raise them (and you won’t taste it). I’ve been baking vegan for a long time and I haven’t found a recipe yet that can’t be easily altered like this! 🙂
thank you!!!

Thank you! These were awesome. I used coconut oil and only used half a zucchini and chopped some beets. I made them as mini-muffins and my little one (9 months old), ate 3 immediately. Can’t wait to try other vegetable combinations for these. Thanks again!
ooh, beets sounds good. great idea.
On my third batch! My toddler loves them! I’ve been making mini muffins and going to try regular size, hopefully they’re just as moist.
i make regular size and they are really moist! thanks!
I’m super bummed these looked great but were not a hit. They lacked flavor, the texture is very gritty and despite blending veggies in the nutribullet not as smooth or moist as I thought. I saw all the good reviews maybe this just isn’t my taste.
Hmm. I’m sorry to hear that! Did you use applesauce and ripe bananas? Honestly, every time I make these, it still surprises me
at how moist and tasty they are. Haha. Maybe give it another go with riper bananas! Good luck.
Can I replace the egg with something?
My baby has an egg allergy.
hmm. i haven’t tried it without egg. i’ll play around with it and let you know if i come up with something. thanks.
You can substitute 1Tbs vinegar mixed with 2Tbs of water to replace one egg. I do it all the time!
I made these muffins today, I used quick cooking oats and two cups of carrots because I didn’t have any zucchini. I also used coconut oil. I usually never comment on recipes but I had to with this one. They’re SOOOO GOOOD!! Thank you! I finally found a truly healthy recipe 🙂 My toddler loved them too!!
Thank you for your comment! So glad they were a success.
Found some oat bran. I still threw in a tablespoon of ground flaxseed for good measure. My toddler gobbles these up! Thanks for the great recipe! We’re going be making these more regularly.
Yay! So happy…
Made these today with coconut oil and flax seed. I couldn’t find oat bran anywhere! Is there another name for it?
I know someone used oatmeal instead! Perhaps you can try that…
yummy, we made these today and devoured them. I made some changes to the recipe, you can check it out here: http://wellfrockedlass.wordpress.com/2014/06/03/toddler-muffins/
The big changes were using oatmeal and adding blueberries. I also used baby food jars instead of bananas!

can you substitute anything for the oatbran
i actually haven’t tried substituting so i can’t say for sure… anyone? but i’ll get back to you, once i experiment some!
I used oatmeal and it worked great. My kiddo devoured them.
http://wellfrockedlass.wordpress.com/2014/06/03/toddler-muffins/
Yay! I was thinking oatmeal too, but haven’t tried it yet!
These look great! Do you think that it would work if I substituted pear puree instead of the applesauce, my daughter has an apple allergy.
I don’t see why not! The applesauce helps give it a little sweetness. So pear should do the same thing, although there
may be a hint of pear taste. Which is not a bad thing! Let me know how it turns out…
Does anybody know how many calories if this recipe is made into 12 muffins ?? Thanks
Made these today for my 16 month old and used coconut oil. They are wonderful! Thanks for the recipe!
Coconut Oil sounds great!
do you measure 1/3 cup solid or melted coconut oil?
Either way is fine. I used solid and it mixed up fine!
Love the added veggies! I’ve been looking for a healthy, no sugar muffin recipe for my son and this looks great! Any suggestions on leaving out the oat bran and if any alterations are needed?
Should be fine to leave out without alterations. Let me know!
Made them today and used oatmeal baby cereal in substitute for oat bran. I feel if I didn’t put anything in to substitute they would have been too moist/mushy. I also only used 1/6 c vegetable oil and added 1/6 c more applesauce to limit the fat. They turned out great and very moist! My 10 month old gobbled them up! Thanks for a great recipe!
Sounds great! Glad to know it worked out!
My toddler LOVES these! I like to throw in a handful of blueberries with the veggies and puree.
Good idea!
Mild tasting I meant! Lol
Hi there, these look absolutely awesome! Love that there’s no sugar. Making these for my toddler tomorrow. P.s. I too never thought I’d hide veggies but yet here we are 🙂 also I just wanted to say canola oil is a bit questionable in terms of it being one of those things that’s quite likely to be genetically modified. Would be better with a milks tasting olive oil or maybe even coconut oil? Ill give it a go and let you know 🙂
Let me know how it goes. Coconut oil sounds promising! I’m also interested. As far as canola oil, I think it is a healthier option than butter, lower in saturated fat and more nutrients… But I am open to many different healthy options! Thanks!
